22 April 2013 Course Goals
This semester I have focused my writings all around the subject of Ray Lewis to effectively complete the Researching Our Multi-genre Projects (ROMP) assignment. Through this assignment, I met the criteria specified in the course goals provided at the beginning of the course. The following are the course goals followed by my personal examples as to how I effectively met all of them. Goal A -Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes
All writing is aimed for a specific audience and purpose. When writing a genre it is crucial for the author to know their audience and adapt to their piece around that specific audience. Furthermore, the author must know their intended purpose and make all aspects of their genre reflect that purpose. As my first genre for the ROMP assignment, I decided to construct a magazine advertisement, which I feel shows my ability to complete this goal. The audience of this was focused mainly at young teenagers to college athletes who dream of having a future in sports. This audience includes a wide range of middle school, high school, and college football players across the nation. The magazine ad was for Gatorade which is a recognized sports drink for athletes across the world. First to address this audience, I opened the advertisement with, “17 years of success” followed by “ This can be you”. These two phrases directly relate to young athletes who dream to be in the National Football League(NFL). Furthermore, I chose a picture of Ray Lewis after his Superbowl victory. Across the nation thousands of little kids dream of playing in this life changing game so by using this image it directly relates to the intended audience. By tying the successful career of Ray Lewis with a sports drink that has a history of excellence it helps to get the purpose of my advertisement to the intended audience.
Goal B -Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre
In order to effectively compose a piece the author must transform his writing around the type of genre he plans on writing in. In my diary genre I was able to change my style of writing to reflect that of an NFL football player’s diary. With this genre, I wrote two separate entries, one revolving around the pre –Superbowl jitters and the second around the accusation of him taking a banned substance. I observed that most diary entries include a date to begin so both mine are labeled accurately with the date in which they would be written. For example, my pre-Superbowl diary entry is labeled as “February 1, 2013” which was two days before the actual Superbowl. Furthermore a diary is typically filled with emotions and inside thoughts. To go with this I wrote, ‘They are insane for even trying to accuse me. I am pissed by the fact some sleazebag is running his mouth about how I cheated.” This quote from his journal clearly shows his inside thoughts on the topic at hand. By effectively mimicking typical dairy entries I was able to create a diary entry for Ray Lewis focused on defining moments of his career.
Goal C-Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments
At the beginning of this assignment I had a vast background on the history of Ray Lewis, but even with this knowledge I had to conduct further research specific to each genre I wanted to create. By beginning the ROMP assignment with the FAQ-I sheets it allowed me to focus my research and select only the necessary items that I would later use to complete my genres. An FAQ-I sheet is a chart broke up into four categoires to help focus our reseach. The first column is for factual information we find from an outside source The second is for our argument and how it helps support our purpose. The third is questions which helps us take a further insight as to how this might fuel other aspects of our paper. The final section is to specify which genre we plan on using the information for. One example of this is from my fifth FAQ-I sheet which states, “Lewis was asked about a Sports Illustrated report that claimed a company supplied him with deer-antler velvet extract which contains IGF-1, a performance enhancing substance banned by the NFL”1 I was able to use this knowledge when composing my dairy entry that was mentioned above. This is a good place to use this information because it focuses on a controversial topic. This controversial topic would create an emotional response from Ray Lewis which can make for a good diary entry.
Goal D -Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres
As part of completing the ROMP assignment, I needed to be able to create genres that use print and non-print. Personally, I believed that it was crucial to split these two almost equally so I composed three print genres and two non- print genres followed by one genre that is split between print and non-print. My two genres that are non-print are my Magazine cover and a Magazine advertisement. I composed my magazine advertisement by combining two split screen pictures of Ray Lewis. On the other hand, my print genres are my professional genre, interview, and diary entry. By using a combination of print and non-print it keeps an audience more intrigued and interesting in a topic, and I was able to do this to compose my overall ROMP assignment. My overall project is a perfect example as to how a split of print and non-print genres make for a better overall assignment.
Goal E -Students will be able to describe and apply appropriate writing processes, both individually and in collaborative contexts
It is crucial for a student to be able to go through the entire process of writing and be able to improve his work off of other's opinion and their own. I was able to meet this course goal in completion of my magazine advertisement for Ray Lewis. I started with just the idea and some background information on how they are typically composed. With this knowledge I made my own draft for it. I brought this draft to peer editing with the class and got good feedback from both the class and Dr. Sherry. My classmates recommended to make it a split picture to make it more visually appealing. Furthermore, they suggested I throw in Gatorades logo to make it more like a advertisement. After receiving this information and others from my classmates, I transformed my magazine advertisement from what I believed was good criticism, into a better overall assignment.
